Questions And Answers

What is Wood Photo®?

Wood Photo® is a completely new and unique way to create your own personalized home décor using your favorite photos or image. Wood Photo stands apart from other personalization processes because we are NOT painting your image, using lasers or screen-printing, or simply gluing your photo to the surface. We carefully take your image and embed it directly into the surface of the wood, permanently sealing the surface. This allows your final Wood Photo print to maintain all the quality, detail and resolution of the original image while allowing the natural aspects of the wood such as grain and texture to show through.

How is it made?

Wood Photo® uses an innovative process that allows us to take high-resolution imagery and permanently seal it into the surface of our wood panels. The nitty-gritty details are a closely guarded secret, but you can rest assured – we aren’t using lasers, screen-printing or decoupage. In our opinion, we think our process will you give you a much better result than any of those options.

Is the picture printed or painted on the wood?

No. When you create a Wood Photo® print, your image is not printed or painted on the wood. Some other processes will actually print right onto the surface of the wood, but typically they are only able to reproduce low-resolution imagery. Wood Photo is able to maintain the high-resolution and quality of the original image.

Is the picture glued on?

No. Decoupage typically involves a process where the image is printed and glued to a surface. This creates a plastic-like feel to the surface of the wood whereas the process used for Wood Photo® permanently embeds the image into the surface of the wood. This way the wood still maintains its natural qualities when you see or touch it.

Will my Wood Photo® print be easy to hang? How do I mount it on the wall?

Wood Photo® prints are extremely easy to hang on the wall. Woodland Panels have a birch hanger attached to the backside. Summit Panels have a built-in nail groove routed into the back edge. Just position the hanger or groove onto a nail head until it's level and you're done.

Hanging your Wood Photo print, either vertically or horizontally, will be a piece of cake. You'll be sitting back and admiring the view before you even realize it.

If I want to order the same photo on different wood panels, do I need to place separate orders?

No. When you create an account on our site, you will be able to upload and store up to three images. Once you've used the interactive design tool to create your first Wood Photo print and added it to your cart, creating a second (or third!) is as easy as clicking back into the design tool, choosing a new panel and reusing your saved photo. Each Wood Photo® print will be packaged individually for its own protection, but your entire order will be shipped together for one delivery fee.

What types of panels are available for purchase?

Starting off, we have two incredible wood panels for you to choose from, including our signature Woodland Panels with their unique shape and natural bark edge. Each one of these panels is available in a variety of different sizes. In the future, we intend to add many more sizes, shapes and styles, so always check back to see what's new.

You can find more detailed information on each type of panel here.

How does the interactive design tool work?

The interactive design tool is extremely easy to use. The entire process is broken up into three easy steps. With this tool you can choose a style and size of wood panel, upload your own photo or image, and then edit and position the image on the panel. When you have completed each step of the design process, you will be able to see a preview of what your final Wood Photo® print will look like. Listed below are more detailed instructions. You can also find this same information by clicking the "Help" button or one of the question mark icons while in the design tool.

1)  Panel

Select your panel by clicking on one of the wood panel images in the "Panel" section.

Next, select a shape (rectangle, square, etc.) from the "Shape" section.

Finally, click on your size (5x7, 8x10, etc.) from the drop down box in the "Size" section.

To proceed, either click on "Click Here NEXT STEP" or the tab "2) Border."

2)  Border (available on Woodland Panels only)

Click on a border image to add it to your Woodland Panel.  Select a border that compliments your image.

Wood Photo uses borders to enhance your product and to accommodate for the small,
natural variance in the size of the Woodland Panels. Borders allow us to position your photo within the clear space of the wood slice.

To proceed, either click on "Click Here NEXT STEP" or the tab "3) Image."

3)  Image

Click "Upload Image" to upload an image from your computer.

Once your image is loaded, a small thumbnail version of your image will appear below "Image Library." Click on the thumbnail of your image to add it onto your wood panel.

In the design tool, you can move your image by clicking and holding down the left button of your mouse. Then move the mouse to position the image as you want it.

You can also zoom in and out, rotate your image and rotate the panel by using the control features found below the preview image.

Once your image and panel are orientated the way you want, click "Add to Cart." A pop-up box will appear. If you are certain you are ready to proceed, click "Confirm and Add to Cart."

If you wish to go back and change something, click "Cancel" and make your changes by clicking on the tab you wish to change (panel, border or image) and following the corresponding instructions for that step.

NOTE - This is your last chance to make any adjustments to your image. Clicking "Confirm and Add to Cart" will finalize your image. If you wish to make changes after you have confirmed and added it to your cart, you will need to delete the item from your cart and start over.

Once you have clicked on "Confirm and Add to Cart", follow the steps in the checkout process to finish your order.

Image & Photo

Can any image be used?

You can upload any image you wish to use however, due to factors in our uploading process, images must be smaller than 5014 x 3343 pixels. This means that the best photos will be taken with a 16 megapixel camera or smaller.  The most common files used are jpegs.

We do reserve the right to deny using any photo or artwork that we consider to be vulgar or profane. Please see our terms of use and privacy policy for more specific lawyer speak.

What are the best images to use?

Whatever image you want! Any idea, any photo, any piece of artwork you can think of would work great as a Wood Photo® print. If you’re struggling for ideas, you can review our idea gallery for inspiration. We will be updating the idea gallery often, so feel free to check back for new ideas.

We do offer suggested optimal resolutions and sizes that you can find here. The reason we have these suggestions is because we want your final Wood Photo print to be as clear and sharp as your original image, but we also understand that not every photo you own is going to have the best resolution. Scanning those old pictures of your great-grandparents or a Polaroid from grade school won’t be as sharp as an image taken with a modern digital camera, but they would still make for an amazing Wood Photo print.

Due to certain factors in the uploading process, IMAGES MUST BE SMALLER THAN 5014 x 3342 PIXELS. In other words, this means that your images must have been taken with a 16 MEGAPIXEL CAMERA OR SMALLER

How damage resistant is Wood Photo®? Will the image rub off, fade, peel or scratch?

As with any type of wood, Wood Photo® prints can be damaged if subjected to abrasion or scratched with a sharp object. Also, the best place to display your Wood Photo print would be indoors.

Can I hang my Wood Photo® print outdoors? How does sunlight affect the image?

Hanging a Wood Photo® print outside does run the risk of sunlight fading the image over time. If you desire to hang your Wood Photo print outdoors, we recommend using a UV inhibitor. UV inhibitors can be found at most local hardware stores and will provide years of outside UV protection.

How will the natural wood surface affect/change my photo?

Our selection of Wood Photo® wood panels will enhance your original image. All of the detail and resolution of your photo is maintained while allowing the natural grain and texture of the wood to show through. This gives the final print a warm, hand-made feel and allows it to stand above any other personalized items.

One special note that we’d like to point out is that the color pure white is not very strong when embedded into wood. If you have an image that contains a lot of strong whites such as snow, clouds or even bright white clothing, it is possible that the grain, texture and color of the wood may be more pronounced in these areas. This effect is yet another reason why a Wood Photo print is truly unique.

Miscellaneous

Can I decorate or embellish my Wood Photo® print?

Definitely. Odd question? Not at all! As a company that has its roots in the crafting industry we completely understand the desire to embellish. We actually encourage you to do whatever you’d like to your final piece. Wood Photo® is a personalized piece of home décor, and any extra personal touches you add will only make it more unique to you. The only limitation would be if you intend to carve into the surface. Summit Panels use Baltic birch, which is not suitable for woodcarving. Woodland Panels, on the other hand, are made from natural basswood and could easily be carved upon. Other than that, feel free to paint, embellish, decoupage, or wood burn till your heart is content.

  • Our raw material is harvested from plantation and managed woodlands.
